Ball valves are essentially a spherical “ball” with a hole through the centre. This ball is squeezed between two seats by a ball retainer. When the ball is turned so that the hole is in line with the ports fluid is allowed to flow. To stop this flow the ball is turned 90° to block the flow. This is when the problems can occur, turning the valve on or off. Ball valves are designed to be shut off at low flow with almost no pressure drop across the ball - that is equal pressure each side. When a ball valve is shut off with a high flow rate, the velocity of the fluid across the seats increases until the valve is completely closed. This is caused by the velocity of the fluid Safety Relief Valves across the diminishing orifice. This high velocity if experienced for a long time, e.g. metering the flow, will erode the seats. The seats used in ball valves are a delrin material – a hard wearing compound commonly used as a seal. Some fluids affect the seal more than others – water based fluids such as solcenic hydraulic fluids are very abrasive and will erode ball valve seats very quickly. If a single ball valve is used there is a high chance Instrumentation Ball Valves that at some time during its life it has experienced seat erosion. This is alright if you verify your isolation – but what if the job takes a long time and the seats are only leaking a small amount. This small amount will still pressurise the system to an unsafe state. The only safe solution is to use a Double Block and Regulators Double Bleed system where there are two ball valves to isolate the system and two Bleeds to verify both isolation ball valves are working – only then is a ball valve suitable for high pressure
